United Kingdom Extends Methanol Poisoning Advisory Roster with Eleven Destinations
British government has added eleven further countries to its travel alert register concerning the risks of industrial alcohol contamination from tainted alcoholic drinks.
This updated warning covers Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda due to what officials describe as "a worldwide rise in the number of reported cases" of toxic alcohol poisoning.
Only recently, officials had earlier added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current roster, in response to several serious incidents such as the tragic death of six tourists in Laos in 2024.
Travelers are being warned that even tiny quantities of toxic alcohol can result in vision loss or fatality within twelve to forty-eight hrs.

Methanol is a harmful substance commonly used in antifreeze, car cleaning liquid, and paint solvent. This substance is not designed for drinking.

Authorities representative a senior official emphasized that all travellers should know the indicators of toxic alcohol contamination.
"If you're drinking spirits in foreign countries, stick to reputable establishments and refrain from local brews or free shots," the official said.
"Should anything appears suspicious, like a fatigue that's much more severe than usual or vision problems – get medical help right away."
The full register of nations identified as posing a risk of toxic alcohol toxicity now includes: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
